The Chinese wireless market had a relatively mixed August, with the three major players adding a total of about 9.7 million subscribers, marking a slight decline over last month. China Unicom and China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), the smaller two players, have been slowly wresting market share away from market leader China Mobile, driven by their larger data traffic products which are increasingly popular with subscribers, and their collaboration on 4G deployment. China Telecom – the smallest of the three players – remained the top performer, adding a total of 4 million customers, while China Unicom saw a slight month-over-month improvement with 2.7 million subscriber additions. China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) grew its subscriber base by about 3 million users. Things continued to remain mixed on the 4G front, with the three players adding or migrating just about 15 million subscribers, marking a decline over last month. This is largely due to market saturation, with close to 75% of all subscribers in the Chinese market currently on 4G plans.
