The Chinese wireless market had a relatively mixed October, with the three major carriers together adding just 7.4 million subscribers, which is significantly lower compared to previous months. China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), the smallest of the three players, continued to outperform its larger rivals, adding over 4 million subscribers, while China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) added 3 million subscribers and Unicom added 2.7 million. China Telecom’s outperformance was likely driven by its move to offer larger data traffic products, which are increasingly popular with subscribers, as well as its improving 4G reach, with its collaboration with China Unicom on 4G deployment. The company’s subscriber share now stands at about 19.5%, marking an increase of almost 200 bps compared to last year.
